The umbrella treeThe Umbrella Tree (Schefflera actinophylla, sometimes listed as Brassaia) Lens a tropical touch to gardens in warmer regions. A swift-growing evergreen (0.5-1 m annually) it soon reaches 6-8 m tall and 2-4 m wide. Upright cane-like stems are crowned with picturesque “umbrellas” of huge brilliant green leaves. After some years the tree will produce stiff spikes of red flowers a meter or more long; these are held above the foliage, and change to black as the seeds form and ripen. Flowering is variable and does not occur every year. A humidity lover, the Umbrella Tree flourishes in tropical and sub-tropical areas; however it will stand very mild frost if planted in a protected position.
