New design systems add sparkle (II)

New design systems add sparkle (II)A “soft” system was used to counteract these hard surfaces. I selected a comfortable module with enough single and corner units to form a U-shape in the room. In addition to seating, the system came complete with a “surround,” a vertical outer edge that formed a low wall around the seats and set it apart from the rest of the room. These were upholstered in the same fabric as the seating. The tops were black mirror, which made a striking, sparkling contrast to the fawn gray upholstery. They are also practical surfaces for mixing drinks since the walls act as an informal bar, as well as a repository for plants, lamps and art objects.

The walls was painted deeper tone of gray, adding paint for a more interesting and varied texture. Down-lights over the low “wall ” at the rear of the group added sparkle to its mirrored top and cast a subdued glow on the large, half-round framed mirror hung over the group. Art, plants and lamps were placed at strategic spots, where the modular seating and surrounding wall units created a feeling of soft warmth for this understated, elegant environment. The concrete wall of this room has been torn down and replace with a half-top louvered glass panel and lower wall on either side of the entrance.
