The Umbrella Tree

The umbrella treeThe Umbrella Tree (Schefflera actinophylla, sometimes listed as Brassaia) Lens a tropical touch to gardens in warmer regions. A swift-growing evergreen (0.5-1 m annually) it soon reaches 6-8 m tall and 2-4 m wide. Upright cane-like stems are crowned with picturesque “umbrellas” of huge brilliant green leaves. After some years the tree will produce stiff spikes of red flowers a meter or more long; these are held above the foliage, and change to black as the seeds form and ripen. Flowering is variable and does not occur every year. A humidity lover, the Umbrella Tree flourishes in tropical and sub-tropical areas; however it will stand very mild frost if planted in a protected position. It favors rich soil, ample frequent moisture, especially during hot months.

Can be grown in full sun along the coast but requires some shade inland. The tree can be pruned or cut in late spring, to encourage side branching below cut section. The invasive root system calls for careful selection of site, well away from buildings, pools, paths, etc. one of the most popular container plants. It is an excellent subject for patio, terrace or indoors when small. Easily rise from cuttings or stems to a meter tall during warm month.
